Local LD Watch - Mayflower Special Olympics

This week Omnium Radio's presenter DJ Aiken has been exploring the new launch of The Mayflower Special Olympics.

Hosted at YMCA, on Honicknowle Lane (opposite All Saints Academy) each Wednesday, this years Special Olympics kicked off in great fashion with an attendance from the Lord Mayor and Consort, The Honourable Terri Beer and husband Colin. It was great to see them get involved!

The Mayflower Special Olympics provides sporting activities for those with Learning Disabilities and additional needs, to widen access and opportunities for those wanting to have fun and stay active.

Sports including:

-Badminton

-Boccia

-Short-Mat Bowls

-Basketball

-Football

...and other fun activities!

An additional Football Club is also available at All Saints Academy held on Sunday mornings from 10am to 12pm.

The Mayflower Special Olympics were founded in 2011 by Alan and Maureen Stockdale to help their son David enjoy sport as he suffers from Cerebral Palsy.

In attendance were the Lord Mayor, Terri Beer and Consort, Colin Beer who enjoyed watching some sports activities during the event, Lord Mayor Beer chatted at length with many of the athletes about what activities they enjoy and why they enjoy the Mayflower Specials.

Lord Mayor Beer gave a talk expressing:

"how wonderful it is to see a club like The Mayflower Specials come together for those with disabilities to have fun and enjoy the sporting activities as much as possible"
