With the cost of living being at an all time high currently, we are all looking for low-cost or free ways of spending our time.

I have recently joined my local library in Efford and have found a little treasure that really is underutilized. I had known of its existence but had never ventured inside. This changed when I saw a post in the local Facebook group advertising a weekly craft club in the library. Suffering from severe social anxiety at times, I was very wary but also excited. I had seen another girl say she would like to go but also had anxiety. We chatted and arranged to go together. We were warmly welcomed by librarian, Laura. Coffee and tea available for 50p a mug with free biscuits and lollies. We sat, crafted and chatted about all sorts. After the group I was invited to join the library.

I attended again this week and decided to go a bit earlier and get some of my University work done. I was shown to a quiet study area where I had free access to WiFi. Craft group was 2-3pm and I studied for a bit again after. Before leaving I had a good look around the library and saw how truly wonderful it is, I found a book, was shown how to use the computer to check it out and left. It made me think about how these gems are freely available for everyone but just not used enough. Sadly libraries have cut open hours due to lack of attendees, I am hoping this will change.

Since joining, I appreciate what a great community resource a local library is.

There is the obvious activity of book borrowing, but there are also many others including craft groups, computers to use, printing and copying, family history searches, meeting rooms for hire, audiobooks, free workshops, dementia inclusive groups, reading challenges, storytime sessions and Library market days.

Libraries are a fantastic way of meeting new people from all different walks of life. If you are lonely, you will always be greeted by a friendly face.

There is also the Plymouth Libraries app available on Google Store and Apple Store where you can access opening times, locations and book loans etc.

In times when money is tight and depression/anxiety is high, why not visit a wonderful community hub and see how it can help you? Whether it's to borrow a book, study in a quiet space or join a group.
